PCI to high-speed USB peripheral controller makes data transfer easy

23 August 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

Connectivity is extremely important for today's consumer and corporate PC users. Users want a connectivity solution that is simple to set up and transfers data fast. Currently, there are two common ways to transfer files between PCs. One, the PCs have to be connected through a network (wireless or wired). Two, transfer the file to an external storage media (USB hard drive or flash drive), then copy it to the target PC.

This is according to PLX Technology, who says that the first method can be complicated if the network is not already set up, and transferring large amounts of data (in the Gigabytes) through the network will be extremely slow. The second method is a two-step process, which may be easy to set up, but because it is doing twice the amount of work, will also be very slow. The company says that it has the solution for simple and fast connectivity - USB Duet Technology.

USB Duet Technology

USB Duet Technology adds a multifunction USB Peripheral port onto a PC. The port allows the PC to easily connect to other PCs with a single standard USB cable, providing ultra fast performance of up to 480 Mbps. Behind the USB Duet port is the NET 2280 PCI to Hi-Speed USB 2.0 peripheral controller, which can be easily designed into the existing PCI bus of all PCs. This controller has an extremely low standby power (sub-μW) and tiny FPBGA package (8 x 8 x 1 mm). The NET 2280 is well-suited for any mobile platform.

USB Duet Technology function examples:

* USB Duet HD turns a PC into a mass storage device for file sharing and data backup, simply by plugging in the USB cable. It is an easy way to share files and data between two PCs. No driver is necessary. It also makes PC migration faster and simpler by transferring current data and settings from an old PC to a new PC.

* USB Duet FastLink networks two or more PCs simply through USB only. There is no need for an Ethernet router, switch, hub, or cables. No driver necessary, and it works just like a network interface card.

* USB Duet SuperCOM replaces slow and outdated RS232 communication ports. PLX provides software ready to implement one or multiple communication ports over the USB Duet port. No additional driver is necessary.

* USB Duet HD/MTP provides a direct and fast connection from an ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) to home PC for transferring digital media. It also allows for easy synchronisation with the home PC for new e-mail, music and other digital content. USB Duet Technology performs much faster than the current Bluetooth or WiFi connection.
