24-bit stereo DAC provides 87 dB dynamic range

6 September 2006 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Maxim's MAX5556 is a 24-bit, I²S-compatible stereo DAC. This sigma-delta DAC has specs of less than -87 dB of total harmonic distortion plus noise, and more than 87 dB of dynamic range. It integrates interpolation, de-emphasis, analog output filters, click-and-pop-free power-up and power-down, and line level outputs that swing 3,5 Vp-p with a 10 kΩ load. These features make the MAX5556 ideal for digital audio applications.

The MAX5556 device includes automatic clock divisor detection (MCLK/LRCK) and operates with a sampling frequency between 2 kHz and 50 kHz from an MCLK up to 25 MHz. The output is muted if the clock signal is lost, and then returns to normal operation without glitches when the clock signal is restored.

The DAC, which comes in a narrow 8-pin SO package, operates from a single +5 V supply and has a 16-bit to 24-bit I²S-compatible serial interface. Future parts are offered for applications not requiring I²S compatibility: the MAX5557 with a 16-bit to 24-bit left-justified interface; the MAX5558 with a 16-bit right-justified interface; and the MAX5559 with an 18-bit right-justified interface.
