3-output bus-controlled single-chip audio amplifier

29 November 2006 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

STMicroelectronics' new compact stereo headphone and loudspeaker driver chip in a 2,5 x 2,4 mm flip-chip package, the TS4956, has a flexible I²C bus control interface. Intended for mobile phones, PDAs and laptop computers, the TS4956 can drive up to 38 mW per channel continuous average power into 16 Ω headphone loads, or 450 mW into 8 Ω loudspeaker loads, when operating on a 3,3 V supply. There is a move away from traditional audio power amplifiers to more complex integrated audio solutions, and the TS4956 provides such a system by offering three dedicated outputs in a single chip: one stereo headphone drive, one stereo loudspeaker output and one mono line for a handsfree set. The number of external components required is minimised by providing I²C selection of eight different operating modes, including a stereo loudspeaker option, and 32 step -34 dB to +12 dB digital volume control. Standby current for the TS4956 is 0,5 μA, with just 10 nA shutdown current, and it operates from 2,7 to 5,5 V.
