Backlight driver and general-purpose boost controller

7 March 2007 Opto-Electronics

Analog Devices' ADP1621 is a flexible boost controller configurable as a LED driver core that can be optimised with external components for almost all types of PWM current-driving LED backlight applications. For example, the ADP1621 can drive 10 LEDs in an automotive navigation display or 60 LEDs (in one or multiple strings) in a 15" notebook computer display, while achieving an efficiency rating of over 90%.

The average LED brightness can be adjusted by applying a PWM signal directly to the device. The ADP1621 employs a fixed-frequency, pulse-width modulation and current-mode step-up converter controller approach, and drives external N-Ch MOSFET. Its input voltage range is 2,9 V to 5,5 V and shutdown current is 10 μA.

Besides being configurable as a current source LED driver, the ADP1621 can also be configured as a boost, buck, flyback, SEPIC, or forward converter, either in isolated or non isolated topologies.
