New integrated, scalable IT system solution

13 June 2007 Enclosures, Racks, Cabinets & Panel Products

Whether in small businesses or major enterprises – the demands placed on IT performance are growing incessantly. Highly complex applications, ever faster processors, and round-the-clock information and communication call for more than just an intact physical infrastructure.

With RimatriX5, Rittal is now offering an integrated overall concept for modern computer centres with comprehensive service and five matched IT modules: Rack, Power, Cooling, Security as well as Monitoring and Remote Management. This provides users with an all-round solution for secure, rack-based IT infrastructures, ensuring cost-saving, efficiency and maximum availability, from single-rack solutions to full-scale computer centres.

Complete package with full service

A key feature of the RimatriX5 concept is the scalable service package, which provides comprehensive solutions from a single supplier - from precise risk analyses and software-based planning with dedicated configuration tools, via application-oriented installation, commissioning, maintenance, repair and warranty services, right up to fast and intelligent escalation management.

Rittal guarantees maintenance in the sense of proactive security in conjunction with the CMC-TC (computer multicontrol TopConcept). The monitoring system reports escalation events to a control centre whatever the time of day, enabling appropriate countermeasures to be initiated without delay.

Rack - the module for maximum expandability and efficiency

The philosophy of RimatriX5 is based on a rack-optimised configuration of IT infrastructures, with the modularity to permit adaptation to specific IT demands. This encompasses coordinated interaction of rack-based climate control, power and security solutions, which are essential for enhanced performance per IT rack and thus for optimisation of the overall efficiency of an IT infrastructure in respect of space requirements and fixed costs. The heart of the rack-optimised design is the widely proven TS 8 server enclosure platform which features maximum rack volumes, scalable baying options, optimum surface protection, extreme stability, expansion possibilities, access security and intelligent passive ventilation.

Power - the module for high availability and low costs

Miniaturisation and the ever greater performance of hardware components place new demands on modern power management concepts. Power management in RimatriX5 bundles the demands with regard to redundancy, scalability and maximum availability, to be able to address the actual power requirements of an individual application. From power input and routing in the racks to dedicated signal and voltage distribution, the principle of scalability is implemented consistently - including later expansion without interruption to current operations. Thanks to plug-and-play power distribution for both rack and room, and with a corresponding UPS unit as power supply backup, optimum power performance and maximum availability are ensured.

Cooling - the module for ideal computer centre climates

Constantly greater packing densities for computer systems and the ever increasing processor speeds can easily become a source of problems regarding heat. This must be taken into account when planning systems, racks and computer centres. Consequently, it is necessary to derive new modular climate control concepts which give due consideration to parameters such as temperature, humidity, the velocity, pressure and direction of air flows, and the heat losses of the installed components. With the RimatriX5 cooling module, climate control solutions can be matched exactly to the specific application requirements, whether passive cooling, active rack-specific control or even active liquid-based cooling systems for high-performance CPUs. Software-assisted planning tools minimise investment outlay and provide for maximum peace of mind. Scalable climate control solutions, furthermore, not only cut the costs of initial investment, they also safeguard options for future expansion.

Security - the module for confidence through prevention

The physical rack and room security embodied by the RimatriX5 security module enables a maximum level of protection for IT infrastructures. Computer multicontrol Top Concept (CMC-TC) is a complete security management system as protection against consequential damage and costs, as well as the central organisational interface to facility management. The integration of various preventive aspects, such as access authorisation, temperature monitoring and administration, video monitoring and smoke detection, makes CMC-TC the central point of information in the computer centre. Temperature, smoke and vibration sensors, together with sophisticated access control solutions and tested enclosure extinguisher systems, provide reliable rack protection against external influences and tampering. This preventive approach serves to keep operating costs low and offers genuine return on security investment. The modular principle of the CMC-TC system, furthermore, permits individual tailoring and plug-and-play expansion as and when necessary.

Monitoring and remote management - the module for the transparency of all sensitive parameters

The complete networking and remote administration of the system components serves to reduce day-to-day costs. After all, targeted remote maintenance and diagnosis for sensitive parameters extends the service life of active components. With the new remote management software, Rittal now offers security and remote maintenance from a single partner. The temperatures of racks or particular components, for example, can be analysed and controlled, the operating status of the UPS backup can be documented, power management can be implemented for individual modules and the operating hours of batteries and fans can be evaluated as a basis for preventive intervention - all from a single software interface. The integration of call centre functions ensures the shortest possible reaction times in case of escalation.

Summary

The RimatriX5 system solution from Rittal provides high availability and scalability, two aspects vital in today's IT infrastructures whatever the size, whether they are centralised in small server rooms or large computer centres. What's more, users receive a one-stop system solution from a company with a proven track record and a global presence.
