High-speed memory key reader/writers

13 June 2007 DSP, Micros & Memory

Datakey Electronics, a manufacturer of rugged, pre-programmable memory keys and tokens, has announced the release of its new KeyLink III and SlimLink III reader/writers.

These devices were designed specifically to optimise throughput speeds when used with SPI-flash memory keys and tokens. These readers not only support Datakey's serial flash products, but also all of its standard serial EEPROM products, including those that utilise Microwire, I²C and SPI interface protocols.

These new products are ideal for developments and for programming high-capacity SPI-flash keys and tokens (SFK/SFT/SFX), which range from 1 to 32 Mbit and are suited to applications such as in-field firmware updates, datalogging and 'recipe' uploading. They have a USB interface and offer typical write speeds of 1,2 Mbps - allowing the user to write the entire contents of a 1 Mbyte data carrier in under 7 seconds - an improvement of more than 100-fold from the previous generation. They also offer simple migration for existing applications.

The reader/writers also have the capability to read/write unique identifier keys and tokens. This allows OEM designers to implement copy-proof data carrier applications. While the most common application is product development, these products are entirely suitable for field deployment (re-sale) by OEM users of Datakey Electronics' keys and tokens. They can also be provided in panel-mount variations. Development kits are available, which include a new KeyLink III or SlimLink III reader/writer with USB cable, customer-specified key or token samples, sample keyceptacles or receptacles, new and improved PC demo software with source code and a user's reference manual.
