16-bit, 8-channel ADC offers fault protection

27 June 2007 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

The LTC1856 from Linear Technology is a 5 V, 16-bit, 8 channel, 100 Ksps ADC with ±10 V input ranges, and features additional fault protection. An over-voltage fault up to ±30 V on one or more unused channels will not corrupt the accuracy of the selected channel and protection is guaranteed on 24 V (±10% tolerance) industrial supply lines.

The device's multiplexer can be configured to accept four differential inputs, eight single-ended inputs or combinations of both. This ADC offers DC performance of ±3 LSB (max) INL (integral non-linearity) with AC performance of 87 dB SINAD (signal to noise And distortion), -101 dB THD (total harmonic distortion) and is optimised for multichannel high-resolution applications such as instrumentation and industrial process control.

Operating from a single 5 V supply, the LTC1856 consumes only 40 mW at 100 Ksps. It includes a 2,5 V internal reference with a typical temperature coefficient of ±10 ppm/°C, which can also be externally driven for improved accuracy. For power-sensitive applications, two powerdown modes are available: Nap mode, in which the power dissipation drops to 27,5 mW with the reference active, and Sleep mode at 40 μW with the reference powered down.

The LTC1856 is part of a pin- and software-compatible family available in SSOP-28 packages that includes the LTC1855 (14-bit) and LTC1854 (12-bit) for performance/cost optimisation. The entire family is available in commercial and industrial temperature ranges.
