Two new UART devices claimed industry-firsts

Exar recently introduced two products that it claims are industry firsts: an I²C/SPI UART with 64-byte FIFO and integrated RS232 transceiver combination, designated the XR20V2170 (V2170); and a low voltage 1,8 V I²C/SPI UART with 64-byte FIFO, designated the XR20M1170 (M1170). Both devices target industrial, consumer and battery-powered applications.

The V2170 is a high performance UART with 64-byte TX and RX FIFOs, a selectable I²C/SPI slave interface and RS232 transceiver. It operates from 2,97 V to 3,63 V and offers additional features such as a programmable fractional baud rate generator and 8X and 4X sampling rates that allow for a maximum baud rate of 1 Mbps at 3,3 V. The standard features include 16 selectable TX and RX FIFO trigger levels, automatic hardware (RTS/CTS) and patented software (Xon/Xoff) flow control, and a complete modem interface. Onboard registers provide the user with operational status and data error flags. An internal loopback capability allows system diagnostics. The device is available in a 40-pin QFN package.

The M1170 UART has 64 byte TX and RX FIFOs, a selectable I²C/SPI slave interface and operates from 1,62 V to 3,63 V. The enhanced features in the XR20M1170 include a programmable fractional baud rate generator, and 8X and 4X sampling rate that allows for a maximum baud rate of 16 Mbps at 3,3 V. The standard features include 16 selectable TX and RX FIFO trigger levels, automatic hardware (RTS/CTS) and software (Xon/Xoff) flow control, and a complete modem interface. Onboard registers provide the user with operational status and data error flags. This device is available in a 28-pin QFN, 24-pin QFN, 16-pin QFN, 24-pin TSSOP and a 16-pin TSSOP.

Evaluation boards that can easily be connected to an existing I²C or SPI bus are available.
