Analog Devices' ADP3050 is a current mode controlled, 1 A, step-down switching regulator IC for industrial, instrumentation and automotive applications, such as distributed power systems, battery chargers and as a pre-regulator for linear regulators. The part's innovative design allows up to 30% wider input and 20% better thermal performance than competing devices, simplifying system design and lowering overall system size and cost.
The ADP3050's 60 V load dump rating makes it highly suited for automotive, industrial and instrumentation applications. The part has an integrated, 1 A, saturated NPN switch, reducing system size and cost. Spanning 3,6 to 30 V, the part's input voltage range is up to 30% wider than industry standard. This allows design engineers to use one part for a wide range of power regulation needs. The part's SO-8 package incorporates ADI's chip-on-lead thermal enhancement technology, improving power handling by up to 20%, without bulky power packages.
ADI uses advanced current mode circuit topology in this chip, so designers can use any type of output capacitor regardless of ESR (equivalent series resistance) value. Its fixed switching frequency eases noise filtering and allows use of small external surface-mount components.
Other key features include: 200 kHz switching frequency; 3% output accuracy; adjustable and fixed output options; and a shutdown mode that reduces the supply current to 20 µA for power savings.
