Power transformers for Power-over-Ethernet applications

19 September 2007 Passive Components

Providing design engineers with a series of DC/DC converter transformers specifically designed for Power-over-Ethernet applications, BI Technologies' has developed a family of surface mount packages for a wide variety of output voltages. Designated the HM110 Series, the RoHS compliant transformers feature flyback topology and are available in power ratings from 5 W to 15 W for the three standard PoE power ratings.

The transformers are specified at the powered device and work to step down the voltage to the IC level. As the demand for powered devices continues to rise, so does the need for these surface-mount transformers. These devices are ideal for meeting the needs of security cameras, wireless access points and other PoE applications.

The transformers are available in power ratings of 5 W, 6 W, 8 W, and 15 W, with inductance values from 180 μH to 70 μH. DC resistance ranges from 2,5 mΩ to 75 mΩ. Isolation is 1500 Vrms, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. BI Technologies will also produce devices outside these specifications to meet customer requirements.

The transformers feature the following measurements: 5 W-15,0 mm x 22,5 mm x 8,5 mm; 6 W-16,0 mm x 14,0 mm x 7,5 mm 8 W-17,5 mm x 22,5 mm x 10 mm; 15 W - 13,5 mm x 17,8 mm x 12,5 mm. They are available in 33 cm diameter embossed tape and reel packages.
