High-density connectors for flat panel displays

30 April 2008 Interconnection

Molex has introduced a new range of high-density FFC/FPC connectors for flat panel displays (FPD), low voltage differential signal (LVDS) television applications and others.

These large circuit size connectors offer robustness, ease of use and lower applied costs, making them ideal for FPD applications that sometimes require up to 1000 signal lines per unit to support extremely high resolution, flat-screen picture clarity.

The smallest pitch size in this family is a 0,30 mm version that includes staggered tails to achieve its compact 90-circuit design. Molex also offers several 0,40 mm pitch types from 80 to 120 circuits. These versions feature Molex's unique BackFlip actuator design, which rotates 90° and enables easier cable insertion than many front designs and an internal pre-hold cable feature. A reinforced actuator design also provides additional durability.

Molex offers a wide variety of choices for its 0,50 mm pitch high-density FFC/FPC family in circuit sizes from 40 to 98. This pitch family features several unique styles, including: a dust-cover version that protects contacts from metal debris, which can cause contact damage or short-circuiting during panel assembly; a new ultra-compact version with a profile height of 2,50 mm and depth of 4,80 mm; and a vertical version with dual-row contacts that enable cable insertion from various parts of the board. The new low-profile version also offers an improved tactile 'click' feature for users to tell when it is fully actuated.

For LVDS television applications, several types of 0,50 mm pitch high-density connectors are available that utilise the more cost-effective flat flexible cable (FFC) versus flexible printed circuitry (FPC) cable for the other panel display applications. These versions can handle up to 1,2 Gbps depending upon the cable lengths and include a ground plane for good impedance control. Included in this range are a 1,80 mm low-profile type and a vertical style with a front-style Easy-On actuator that rotates 110° for easy cable insertion. These versions can be used for any type of differential signal application ranging from game units to PCs to car navigation equipment.
