Smartcards feature a high level of reliability in terms of security when compared with contemporary credit cards etc, making these cards indispensable in many anticipated systems of the future. There has been rapid worldwide growth in digital satellite broadcasting which makes use of this type of smartcard.
The ID2M series connectors from Hirose were developed for use with digital satellite broadcast receivers and are considered to be user friendly in this application. Although developed with this purpose in mind, these connectors can be used in a wide range of applications.
ID2M features include a card detection switch that detects whether the smartcard has been inserted securely, and a large insertion opening face which aides card insertion for a guaranteed 10 000 mating cycles. For contact reliability, they use a two-point contact structure using two springs. As standard, they are also equipped with a 'board provisional fastening boss' for a 1,6 mm thickness on the PC board. This is a design feature that keeps the board in place during reflow.
