Microchip's PIC18C601 and PIC18C801 microcontrollers are the first ROMless devices in the company's PICMicro family. These ROMless microcontrollers expand the 18C architecture to a powerful 6,25 MIPS CPU. They address up to 256 KB and 2 MB of external program memory and support 8 or 16 bit memory interfaces. Both devices include 1536 bytes of on-board RAM. The new microcontrollers include integrated peripherals such as serial communications, with master I2C, SPI and addressable USART. Other features include a programmable low voltage detect, an enhanced capture/compare/PWM module, built-in phase lock loop for high frequency oscillators and up to 12 10-bit A/D channels.
With the PIC18C601 and PIC18C801 designers are able to create systems that have sufficient free memory for future upgrades. As a result, products can be upgraded with new options without the need for hardware changes. Designs requiring special memory, such as dual port RAM or flash, will also benefit from the external memory capability.
Microchip supports the PIC18C601 and PIC18C801 MCUs with the MPLAB in-circuit debugger and Microchip's sophisticated MPLAB integrated development environment. A high-performance realtime in-circuit emulator is scheduled for later this year.
