Dual-switching DC-DC converter

15 October 2008 Power Electronics / Power Management

Maxim’s new MAX15022 is a flexible DC-DC converter that integrates dual synchronous DC-DC regulators (4 A and 2 A) and dual linear controllers to provide four outputs from a single IC. The device can be used in an array of applications that require multiple voltages, such as telecom/networking equipment, IP phones, RFID readers and automotive multimedia systems.

The MAX15022's integrated switches operate at frequencies from 500 kHz to 4 MHz. The dual converters operate 18° out of phase, reducing the input ripple current and allowing smaller, less expensive input capacitors to be used. With 20 mA sink capability, the two linear controllers can drive two external, low-cost PNP transistors to provide two additional power rails that deliver over 1 A of output current.

The device can externally compensate the switching regulator as well as adjust the output voltage from 0,6 V to the input voltage. It will also allow monotonic startup into a pre-biased output. It has independent enable inputs with analog thresholds that allow for easy power sequencing during power-up and power-down. In addition, it can be configured to track the converter output voltage coincidentally or ratiometrically.

Other standard device features include a digital soft-start/soft-stop, cycle-by-cycle lossless current sensing, hiccup-mode operation and thermal protection.
