The world's smallest RF amplifier

12 November 2008 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Avago Technologies announced what it claimed was the world’s smallest RF amplifier. With miniature 0402 package dimensions and no wirebonds, the VMMK-2x03 amplifiers are said to experience almost no signal loss and minimal parasitics. Their ultra-small size and fully matched SMT design are optimised for 500 MHz to 12 GHz frequencies, making them suitable for a variety of radio architectures.

The amplifiers leverage Avago’s recently announced WaferCap chip scale packaging (CSP) technology. Measuring an ultra small 1 x 0,5 x 0,25 mm, they occupy 5% of the volume and only 10% of the board area of a standard SOT-343 package.

The family of amplifiers provides high gain, high IP3, low NF and integrated 50 Ω input and output matching networks to simplify system design. They can be used in many positions in any radio architecture, such as any mobile device, radios, sensors and military communication applications. Their flexibility in size and high-frequency performance also makes them suitable for applications such as wireline, fibre-optic, base station, CATV and instrumentation.
