Intersil's HFA3842 MAC medium access controller is designed to reduce the cost and size of embedded wireless LAN systems and provide USB or PCMIA connectivity. The cost savings are partly achieved by replacing expensive, large footprint flash memory with smaller (EEPROM), saving on board space and cost, says Intersil.
This enhanced MAC also features built-in USB and PMCIA interfaces for easy integration into products ranging from PCs and notebooks to embedded WLAN systems and stand-alone external WLAN modules. It supports the IEEE 802.11b standard's highest data rate to 11 Mbps. Intersil says the MAC comes with easy-to-install firmware that configures the USB or PCMCIA bus for direct interface with its PRISM II WLAN chip set, allowing OEMs to easily add a complete IEEE 802.11b wireless networking capability to their next-generation products for the home and office.
