SMD pick-and-place machine

18 February 2009 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

The new CSM7200 SMD pick and place machine from Essemtec is well suited as an entrance into the world of fully automatic SMD placement and is especially suitable for the flexible manufacturing of low-volume production runs. The machine works with all current components up to 40 x 40 mm and additionally offers an integrated dispensing system for glue or solder paste. The graphical user interface makes control and programming simple.

The CSM7200 has been developed from the concept of the successful CSM7100. In comparison to the previous model the CSM7200 offers up to 30% higher camera resolution and precision, a larger component area and more vacuum tools. Additional functions have also been implemented, such as automatic pick-up height calibrated with a vacuum sensor and the integrated component counter to monitor supplies.

Up to 100 components can be used on the CSM7200 simultaneously. The feeders are intelligent and motor driven to ensure safe and quick changeover, as the position of the feeder can be identified automatically and the feeder is programmable. The components can be programmed to the feeders by bar code reader to prevent mistakes at changeover.

To enable simple programming, the CSM7200 is equipped with a universal CAD interface which allows placement data to be extracted from the layout programs directly. Changes of program is simple thanks to the virtual-view function, whereby the placement program overlays a live camera feed, allowing components to be added, shifted or deleted by a click of a mouse.

For exact placement of single components, a laser measuring system is used. Employing 'on-the-fly' measuring of the components enables placement rates up to 4000 components per hour. For QFP and BGA components an X-ray vision system is also available, which inspects these components and their connections thoroughly before placing.
