Modular data-logging system

29 April 2009 Test & Measurement

EnviroMon from Pico Technology is a flexible data-logging system made up of a number of separate modules, which can be selected by the user to perform desired functions.

The network is a four-wire cable that carries power and data between the logger, converters and optional equipment like remote alarms. The logger can be attached anywhere along the network cable. For most applications, low cost telephone style cable is used; this allows operation with 400 metres of network cable between the logger and the furthest sensor. With thicker cable, this distance can be increased to a kilometre or more.

The core of the system is the EL005 logger which stores all the data from the sensors and triggers an alarm should a problem occur. The logger can be used in a number of ways:

* As a data-logging system where the logger collects data unattended for a period of time, and then connects to a PC to download the data for display, storage and analysis.

* As a remote data-logging system where data is downloaded periodically to a local PC via modem (radio, telephone or GSM).

* As a data acquisition system, where the logger is permanently connected to the PC. Readings can be monitored in realtime and all data can be published live onto a website.

A temperature starter kit is available which contains an EL005 logger, power supply, software, cables, manual, EL001 temperature converter and three EL015 sensors.
