Hittite has introduced two new GaAs MMIC I/Q up-converter products which span the input frequency range of 11 to 21 GHz, and are suitable for a multitude of applications including point-to-point radio, satellite communications, test and measurement, sensors, military radar, EW and ELINT. The HMC709LC5 and the HMC710LC5 are specified for operation from -40°C to +85°C, and utilise an I/Q mixer topology which reduces the need for filtering of the unwanted sideband.

The HMC709LC5 is a compact GaAs MMIC I/Q up-converter in a ceramic leadless RoHS compliant 5 x 5 mm SMT package. From 11 to 17 GHz this device provides a conversion gain of 13 dB with -20 dB of sideband rejection. The device also provides +26 dBm output IP3, and 10 dB of LO to RF isolation. It utilises a driver amplifier preceded by an I/Q mixer which is driven by an LO buffer amplifier. IF1 and IF2 mixer inputs are provided and an external 90° hybrid is used to select the required sideband.

The HMC710LC5 is offered in the same package and boasts conversion gain of 12 dB with -20 dB of sideband rejection from 16 to 21 GHz. It also provides +30 dBm output IP3, and 12 dB of 2LO to RF isolation. The device utilises a driver amplifier preceded by an I/Q mixer where the LO is driven by an active x2 multiplier. As with the 709 device, IF1 and IF2 mixer inputs are provided and an external 90° hybrid is used to select the required sideband.
