Power supplies for outdoor use

3 February 2010 Power Electronics / Power Management

Mean Well has launched two new 240 W power supply ranges for application in LED lighting, architecture decoration and outdoor lighting. Featuring built-in PFC (power factor correction), the HLG-240 is designed for AC inputs in the range of 90–264 V a.c. while the HLG-240H series features a 90–305 V a.c. input range.

These units not only meet the harmonic current limitation per EN61000-3-2 Class C, but also boast a power factor above 0,9 when loaded over 65%. In addition, they possess 4 kV surge immunity (EN61000-4-5) which complies with the requirements for street lighting.

The power supplies are fully potted by heat-dissipating glue to achieve IP65 or IP67 waterproof/dustproof ratings. Users can adjust the DC output voltage range from 95% to 105% and current range from 50% to 100%. In order to operate in harsh outdoor environments, a full aluminium case and stainless screws are utilised.

Employing advanced LLC and synchronous rectification technology, the HLG-240 and HLG-240H possess feature up to 94% efficiency, meaning that they can be cooled by free air convection from -30°C to +70°C ambient temperature. The units have protection for short circuit, over-voltage, overload, and over-temperature. I/O connections via output cable or terminal block are available.
