Panel-mounted smartcard connector avoids PCB redesign

9 May 2001 Interconnection

By encapsulating its L26 smartcard connector in a slim metal casing and adding a flexible printed circuit cable, FCI developed a panel-mounted smartcard connector that allows OEMs to upgrade equipment fascias without modifying the PCB layouts.

The Z00 series has a compact, one-piece construction, that the company claims is simple to integrate into front panel designs and, with a choice of flexible printed circuit cables of between 58 and 155 mm in length, is easily wired into the circuit.

Two different connector bodies are available, handling card penetration depths of 25 and 35 mm, from card edge to panel surface. Card detection is via integral normally closed, self-cleaning, wiping blade switch.

Providing a choice of 8 or 16 sliding contacts, the Z00 connector series meets both ISO 7816 and AFNOR LTE 93421 standards and with the added option of in-line capacitors, the flexible printed circuit cable ensures compliance with Europe Master Visa recommendations on signal integrity. The cable termination pitch can be either 1 or 1,25 mm.

Withstanding 30000 operations and insertion and extraction forces of up to 10 Nm (max), the rugged connector is suitable for consumer TV, Internet set-top boxes, POS terminals and pre-pay utility meter applications.
