Smartcard connectors for Electronic Purse

23 May 2001 Interconnection

Current forecasts expect above-average growth for 'anonymous' payment technologies. The electronic purse, known in Germany under the GeldKarte or Paycard terms, is issued by banks and saving banks and the German telephone and railway corporations. Typical applications can be found in trade and traffic, public phones, vending machines, trains and buses.

Amphenol's new PUSHMATIC smartcard connector closes an existing market gap in the cashless payment sector. It was especially designed for the memory functions of the GeldKarte and Paycard. It is a vandalism-protected open smartcard connector with manual handling. After insertion of the chip card the PUSHMATIC electromagnetically locks the card in final position. After transaction completion the card is released to be removed.

Its open design prevents blocking of the connector by 'half chip cards' or 'foreign' objects in horizontal as well vertical positions - preventing fraud. A 'card present' switch which detects the card immediately after entrance can be used to activate the installed system. It can also be used for audible or optical signals.

In the passive state the reading contacts of the PUSHMATIC are sheltered in slots and are not accessible from the outside. When the card reaches the reading position the contacts leave the protected area, land on the card contacts and the system is locked. Only then the locking switch indicates readiness and the transaction can begin. After completion the release-solenoid opens and the chip or smartcard is automatically moved into the remove position.

An abnormal termination of transaction is recorded by a switch according to the EMV specification and gives the software of the system 0,4 ms to electrically switch off the system. In addition the PUSHMATIC is automatically unlocked after the card has been removed one third of its way so that the smartcard connector is ready again for a new insertion.
