Mobile device designers require a low power consumption, 2-bit voltage level translator to resolve mixed voltage compatibility issues in certain I²C bus applications. To meet this demand, Fairchild Semiconductor has developed the FXMA2102 – a configurable, dual-voltage supply translator and level shifter that translates voltage levels in I²C bus interface applications.
The chip is designed for bidirectional voltage translation between any two levels from 1,65 V to 5,5 V. The two ports of the device have auto-direction sensing capability, allowing either port to sense an input signal and transfer it as an output signal to the other port. It accommodates standard and fast I²C bus modes, and works as a translator, buffer and repeater. Additionally, it features non-preferential power-up, allowing either VCC to be powered up first. Inputs and outputs track VCC levels, making the device fully configurable. Additionally, the open drain inputs/outputs allow the device to work in push-pull and open drain environments.
The FXMA2102 maximises load capacitance on the I²C bus, offers low power consumption and provides ESD protection that exceeds 8 kV HBM. Available in an 8-terminal leadless MicroPakTM package (1,6 x 1,6 mm) or Ultrathin MLP (1,2 x 1,4 mm), the IC is designed for mobile devices, portable medical devices and set-top-box designs.
