DC-DC converters

27 April 2011 Power Electronics / Power Management

RECOM recently introduced the REC8, REC10 and REC15 series of 8 W, 10 W and 15 W DC-DC converters, respectively.

The REC8 and REC10 are low-cost, regulated DIP24 converters available with 2:1 and 4:1 input voltage ranges and with single or dual outputs. The isolation grade is 2 kV d.c. as standard, with 3 kV offered as an option. The thermal design permits the 8 W converter to cover the full industrial ambient operating temperature range (with free convection) of -40°C to +85°C without derating, while the 10 W converter achieves a maximum operating temperature of +75°C. The converters have efficiencies of up to 87%, which remain consistent over the full input voltage range. In addition, the efficiency remains high with variable loads so that even with a 30% load, the conversion efficiency is still above 80%. The high reliability design offers an MTBF of up to 1,2 million hours.

The REC15 is a regulated 5 x 2,5 cm converter also available with 2:1 or 4:1 input voltage range, single or dual outputs and the same isolation grade as the other variants. Due to its high efficiency, the 2:1 input 15 W converter has an ambient operating temperature range (with free convection) of -40°C to +71°C without derating. It features synchronous rectification for the higher current outputs and the standard output voltages have been slightly increased to 3,4 V and 5,1 V respectively to compensate for any voltage drops in the user’s application.

All of the converters feature power limiting on the outputs, so hiccupping does not occur if an overload condition exists. They also feature very tight output voltage regulation, low output ripple/noise and have a remote enable pin fitted as standard, a useful feature for sequential power-up and shut-down. The converters are EN60950-1 and UL-60950-1 safety certified for worldwide use.
