Wide-input voltage regulators

25 May 2011 Power Electronics / Power Management

The new 100 V LDO and 60 V DC/DC controller can withstand high-voltage transients while maintaining high efficiency – providing peace of mind to designers of low- to mid-current, high-voltage telecom and industrial designs, such as motor control, HVAC relay, smart meters and automotive after-market applications.

The TPS7A4001 50 mA LDO has an input voltage range of 7 V to 100 V, and achieves a very fast settling time of less than 500 nanoseconds for a 50 V transient event. The device, which comes in an 8-pin, thermally enhanced 3 x 5 mm MSOP package, has a low quiescent current of 25 μA and ensures output accuracy in a noisy environment.

The TPS40170 synchronous step-down DC/DC controller offers voltage-mode control with input voltage feed-forward compensation, while supporting input voltages from 4,5 V to 60 V and output currents up to 12 A. The controller protects against voltage spikes up to 62 V, offers a fast FET on-time of 75 ns and shutdown current of 1,0 μA. The TPS40170’s bidirectional synchronisation feature eliminates system beat and EMI noise and reduces input capacitance by up to 50%, saving board space. The device comes in a 3,5 x 4,5 mm QFN, and has samples and evaluation modules available.

In addition to the TPS40170 controller, TI provides a range of SWIFT monolithic switchers with integrated FETs to simplify design in lower-current 60 V applications.

The 2,5 A TPS54260, 1,5 A TPS54160 and 500 mA TPS54060 converters provide up to 95% efficiency to 12, 24 and 48 V industrial and commercial designs and GSM/GPRS modules used in smart meters, fleet management and security systems. All three SWIFT converters are pin-compatible for design flexibility.
