LED driver reduces EMI

26 October 2011 Opto-Electronics

Switching at a frequency of up to 1 MHz and ensuring closely controlled rise and fall times, the AL8807 buck LED driver from Diodes Incorporated has been purpose designed to reduce EMI issues in the lower-cost MR16 LED lamp market. To achieve required higher output powers, the IC can operate at input voltages between 6 V to 30 V and provide up to 8 series-connected LEDs with a constant 1 A current.

The driver’s current accuracy of ±5% means it will meet the requirements of most general low-voltage lighting applications and lead to an improvement in inter-lamp luminance matching in 3 W LED lighting systems. The driver is up to 96% efficient and its output current is simple to set using a single external resistor.

Dimming control is via the application of either a DC voltage or PWM signal on the driver’s control input, which also protects against any over-driving of the LED current. The AL8807’s 1000:1 PWM dimming ratio and DC dimming range from 16% to 100% provide users with flexible and wide-ranging lamp brightness control.
