Vishay expands optocoupler range

8 February 2012 Opto-Electronics

Vishay is broadening its optoelectronics portfolio with the release of six low input current optocouplers with phototransistor output in the DIP-4, SSOP-4 half-pitch miniflat and SOP-4L long miniflat packages, as well as CAT IV, high-voltage isolation models in surface-mount packages.

The new low input current optocouplers provide exceptional isolation for human and equipment safety. The VO617A and VO618A devices, available in the DIP-4 package, offer excellent high-temperature performance and an isolation voltage of 5000 VRMS for switch mode power supply applications.

A current transfer ratio (CTR) of 40% to 320% is achieved for the VO617A at input drive current of 5 mA and at 1 mA for the VO618A. Option 6 offers a creepage distance of ≥8 mm.

The VOL617A and VOL618A are offered in a low-profile (2 mm) SOP-4L package with ≥8 mm creepage distance and an isolation voltage of 5000 VRMS. Optimised for AC adapter applications, they have a CTR range of 40% to 320% at an input drive current of 5 mA and 1 mA respectively.

The VOS618A and VOS628A, in the small SSOP-4 package with an isolation voltage of 3750 VRMS, are suited for programmable logic controller and industrial automation applications. These devices have a CTR range of 63% to 320% at a low input drive current of 1 mA.

Certified by the international safety regulatory agency VDE, the CNY64ST and CNY65ST series products with CAT IV, high-voltage isolation offer long creepage distances and a high isolation test voltage to protect workers and equipment used in high-voltage environments such as solar power and wind turbine grid connections.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has defined protection standards for four different installation categories, CAT I through IV. Category IV has the most stringent protection requirements because it typically involves electrical connections to the utility grid. The CNY6x series of CAT IV optocouplers protects equipment and people from being damaged or injured by a high-voltage spike or transient of up to 12 kV and a recurring peak voltage of 1450 V while allowing data to pass from the high-voltage side to low-voltage monitoring equipment.

In addition to meeting the IEC requirements for over-voltage transients and recurring peak voltage, the CNY6x series features creepage distances – the shortest distance along any path on the outside surface of the package from input to output pin – of up to 17 mm and is certified to be used in CAT IV installations with working voltages up to 1000 V.

The CNY64ST series offers a creepage distance of 9,5 mm while the CNY65ST series provides a creepage distance of 14 mm with CAT IV working voltages up to 600 V. Both feature an insulation distance – the internal distance between the infrared emitting diode and phototransistor through the insulation – greater than 3 mm.

The CNY6x optocouplers provide a broad range of CTR values from 50% to 300% at 5 mA, operate over a temperature range of -55°C to +85°C, and offer a forward current of 75 mA.
