New from Texas Instruments is a 2,5 A stepper motor driver offering enhanced thermal performance in a compact footprint. The highly integrated DRV8818 features low RDS(ON) to improve thermal efficiency, and is targeted at industrial, medical and consumer applications, such as textile manufacturing, pumps, light industrial automation and printers.
The device features typical RDS(ON) of 150 m low-side and 220 m high-side. Flexible decay modes and timing parameters reduce audible noise and vibrations to improve system stability and performance. An integrated indexer simplifies current regulation, enabling full, half, quarter and one-eighth microstepping, for a smoother motion profile. On-chip protection includes over-current, over-temperature, shoot-through and under-voltage lock-out.
The DRV8818EVM evaluation module is also available, which comes with a pre-programmed MSP430 microcontroller for out-of-the box use. An advanced user interface supports acceleration, deceleration and motion profiles, while onboard potentiometers are provided to adjust voltage reference, decay ratio, blanking time and off time. Control and status signals are accessible through test headers.
