16 bit flash MCU with on-chip EEPROM in a single device

15 August 2001 DSP, Micros & Memory

A new flash microcontroller that utilises multichip package technology to add on-chip EEPROM to the device has been released by Hitachi. The new device is claimed to offer 16 bit performance and a range of peripherals more powerful than those on a typical low end 8 bit device, but for a similar cost according to the manufacturer. The new H8/3664N device is based on Hitachi's H8/300H CPU core, and is shipped with 512 bytes of embedded EEPROM in a second die within the package.

The addition of on-chip EEPROM makes the microcontroller suitable for applications that require nonvolatile storage of initialisation or calibration information, such as meters, motion control systems, security systems and communication systems where passwords or other addressing information must be stored. The H8/3664N device can be used in applications that already use the H8/3664F with an external EEPROM, since the devices are pin, function and software compatible.

In addition to the embedded EEPROM, the H8/3664N also has 32 KB of on-chip single-supply flash memory. This allows easy reprogramming of the memory without any additional circuitry and provides for easy end of line production programming, reducing customer inventory and software updates or bug fixes in the field. The on-chip I2C interface enables communication with a wide range of peripherals and makes the device appropriate for many consumer applications, where I2C is the de facto communications standard, and set-top boxes, where it can be used as a low cost systems controller for handling housekeeping and I/O functions. It also makes it suitable for Internet enabled products and industrial applications, such as intelligent sensors.

The H8/3664N has a powerful integrated 16 bit timer module; watchdog timer with built-in oscillator; low operating 3,0 to 5,5 V; and high EMC performance. Other peripherals: two 8 bit timers, a high speed USART, eight channels of 10 bit ADC and 37 I/O pins. It comes in a 64-pin quad flat pack.
