Common mode choke coil arrays

Murata has announced the development of a package where two common mode choke coils are placed in one EIA 1206 array, the space previously taken by a single choke coil.
The ever growing range of information processing equipment, with higher functionality and faster operating speeds, has increased the demand for high-speed differential transmission lines as in IEEE1394 and LVDS. Using differences in the conduction modes between noise and signals, Murata's 1206 common mode choke coils help suppress the noise without affecting the waveform of normal mode signals.
However, until recently, a signal-pair required two choke coils each side of the interface. Strong customer demand to save space and allow higher density mounting resulted in Murata's use of thin film and ferrite material technologies. Here, the company has incorporated two elements into the 1206 footprint of the original single element, and reduced the height to 1,15 mm.
The PLP31D (new DLP 31DN) series is a 3,2 by 1,6 by 1,15 mm SMD. Coupling coefficient between coils can be 0,98 or higher while normal mode current impedance remains low. Thus, common mode noise is effectively suppressed without adversely affecting the signal waveform. The series comprises five values of common mode impedance at 100 MHz, allowing matching to the signal speed and generated noise level.
