Intersil's new ICL3243ECR RS232 serial data transceiver IC is claimed to be the industry's smallest. It converts TTL/CMOS signal levels to and from serial RS232 for the latest PDAs, palmtops, laptops, bar code readers and other battery-powered devices requiring compact, low-power, high-speed, serial data ports.
Packaged in Intersil's miniature micro lead frame (MLF) package (6 x 6 x 0,9 mm), the ICL3243E transceiver combines three transmitters and five receivers in a single IC and meets all EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 specifications, even at 3 V. It is also fully compatible with 3 V, mixed 3 and 5 V, and 5 V-only supplies. Powered down current is 1 µA, and the device features both manual and automatic powerdown controls. It can automatically powerdown when it senses the removal of the RS232 cable.
ESD protection for all RS232 I/O pins is rated to ±15 kV (IEC1000). The MLF ICL3243E transceiver operates at a minimum guaranteed data rate of 250 Kbps, and requires only four small external 0,1 uF capacitors for a complete implementation.
