Ramtron, a leading developer of ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) products, has rolled out the FM3808, the first in a new line of what it calls 'problem solver memories'. The FM3808 combines a 256 Kb nonvolatile FRAM memory with a realtime clock and system-supervisor functions. The unique nonvolatile advantage of FRAM secures all memory and realtime clock configuration settings in nonvolatile registers without a power source of any kind. The company says that the FM3808 enables low profile, surface-mount timer solutions to be built without battery back-up. This ensures high-reliability storage of critical nonvolatile data.
The 256 Kb device includes a system-level realtime clock, power monitor, programmable watchdog timer, and programmable time/date alarm functions. All configuration information is stored in nonvolatile registers. Equivalent SRAM-based realtime clocks require a battery back-up, reducing the products' long-term life. FRAM-based products use integrated ferroelectric capacitor storage cells to store nonvolatile data without a battery. The no-battery advantage makes this device an ideal single-chip solution for applications that demand highly reliable data collection such, as electronic power meters, printers and copiers, and automotive instruments.
The FM3808 is a 70 ns 32K x 8 FRAM memory that operates from a 5 V power supply with 15 mA active and less than 1 µA timekeeping back-up current. It has over 10 years of data retention and is rated over the industrial temperature range of -40 to 85°C, says the company. The FM3808 comes in 32-pin TSOP. A development kit is available that includes the FM3808 chip, all necessary discrete devices and a 0,1 F capacitor that backs up the clock for 48 h. The FM3808DK development kit is delivered in a DIP package to eliminate any analog or fine-pitch surface mount layout issues during prototyping.
