Webb Industries is enjoying a boom in export sales, especially to the US and the UK, says its CEO, Paul Richards. “Our product is of exceptional quality and our labour costs relatively low,” he says, adding that in the telecommunications industry one might say that Webb’s quality to cost ratio is as good as anywhere in the world.
In the UK one of the products that is doing particularly well is the Flatkook 180 antenna which is being used for two-way communication and telemetry, primarily on buses. Importer Tommy Morris of Bloomice says that the Flatkook is an excellent product which will become one of Europe’s best sellers. “It is a tough, low-profile antenna of the highest quality and working with Webb, whose service and professionalism is of the highest order, creates a winning mix,” Morris says. The Flatkook 180 is made to order by Webb according to its frequency in the 100 - 200 MHz band.
In the US, the company is making an impact in the utilities sector with its UHF and VHF Yagi antennas. The Yagi, also known as the Yagi-Uda antenna, is a directional antenna consisting of multiple parallel elements in a line, usually half-wave dipoles made of metal rods. It was invented in 1926 by Shintaro Uda of Tohoku Imperial University.
Ted Manly of TMG Solutions, which distributes Webb’s Yagi in the US, says he initially found interest in the antennas for telemetry applications in water treatment facilities. “Being an unknown brand in the US at the time, Webb’s antennas were put through rigorous field testing over several hot and humid summer months in coastal environments, as corrosive elements in this climate create real challenges.
“Webb’s welded and anodised Yagi antennas, designed to withstand harsh climates, performed very well under these conditions. Webb’s products have been well received for their rugged design and sturdy construction and compete more than favourably against well entrenched competitors,” says Manly. He adds that his company consults for many foreign companies seeking to export to and from the US, and Webb has demonstrated several key characteristics of successful exporters.
Richards says that it is encouraging that important overseas players are increasingly recognising Webb’s manufacturing quality, and is confident that as long as the exchange rate represents such an advantage to these importers, Webb’s export business will grow in leaps and bounds.
