High-efficiency DC/DC converters deliver up to 60 A at 1,8 V

30 January 2002 Power Electronics / Power Management

Artesyn Technologies has launched an entirely new series of DC/DC converters to meet the growing demand for high-current, low- voltage sources for powering latest-generation semiconductor technology.

Housed in an open frame package with an industry-standard half-brick footprint, the EXB250 series converters feature a wide 33-75 V input and are initially available with 3,3, 2,5 or 1,8 V outputs. All three models offer exceptionally high current output capabilities for their size - the 2,5 V and 1,8 V models can deliver up to 60 A. The converters are primarily targeted at networking, telecoms and wireless applications, and are particularly suitable for systems employing a 48 V distributed power architecture, including any that operate from a -48 V central office battery plant.

This DC/DC converter series uses a technique known as synchronous rectification to achieve extremely high conversion efficiencies; the 3,3 V model, for example, has a typical efficiency of 90% and can deliver up to 165 W of output power. Open frame construction means that there are no thermally conductive potting compounds between power dissipating components and heat-sensitive control circuits, and a novel two-board stacked structure is employed to further thermally de-couple these two areas. The overall result is a high reliability design that has a wide operational temperature range (-40°C to +100°C).

All EXB250 series converters offer an output voltage trim facility that enables the output to be adjusted between 90% and 110% of nominal. This is a particularly useful feature for systems designers who wish to perform margin testing by varying supply voltages, and it also allows standard off-the-shelf DC/DC converters to be used in applications involving highly specific voltage requirements. All three converters in the series also offer remote sense capabilities to compensate for distribution losses, and are equipped with a remote on/off facility. The converters have no minimum load requirement, and are comprehensively protected. A combination of nonlatching clamping over-voltage protection and a brick wall current limit characteristic are employed to help maximise system uptime, by ensuring that the converter will continue to deliver power even when in failure mode.

Artesyn's EXB250 series DC/DC converters have a 1500 V d.c. isolation rating and carry a full set of international safety approvals. With the addition of a small number of external filtering components, EXB250 series converters can meet the EN55022 level A and level B standards for conducted noise emissions.
