RS Components is enabling designers to save board space, bill of materials, and development time with the latest Würth Elektronik MagI³C highly integrated DC/DC converter modules.
By integrating the switching regulator, control circuitry and inductor in the same package, the modules require minimal external components. Some models also integrate input and output capacitors and so require no additional components to power the load using factory default settings. External resistors can be used to customise the switching frequency and startup timing as required. Evaluation boards are also available for the modules, which help to quickly choose the right model for the desired load.
The MagI³C family includes the LDHM high-current LED driver module. Designed to operate from a 12 V, 24 V or 48 V supply, it can generate an output voltage from 4,5 V to 60 V and supply 450 mA for up to 16 LEDs in series, with PWM dimming. Support for parallel connection allows higher-current applications. The driver is housed in a TO-263 7EP 7-lead surface mount package, thermally enhanced with a single exposed pad, and is compatible with both ceramic and low-ESR capacitors.
Also in the MagI³C family is the VDRM series of variable-output step-down modules in surface mount TO-263 7EP or BQFN leadless packages. The modules offer high efficiency and a wide input voltage range for operation from common rail voltages such as 9 V, 12 V, 28 V or 48 V. Output voltage ranges are 0,8 V – 6 V, 2,5 V - 15 V, and 5 V – 24 V, for powering logic, IC core and analogue circuitry, with maximum current ranging from 1 A to 5 A.
In addition, FDSM fixed-output variants are packaged as 3-pin or 7-pin SIP modules, and capable of sourcing 200 mA, 500 mA or 1 A at 3,3 V or 5 V. Designed for high efficiency, with pulse skipping at light loads, they can operate heatsink-free in many circuits. Comprehensive protection including output over-voltage, short-circuit and thermal shutdown is also built-in.
MagI³C modules are suitable for a wide variety of applications, including on-board point-of-load converters, powering I/O interfaces, test and measurement instruments, general industrial equipment, medical electronics, and for replacing linear regulators.
