How do you get eight channels of analog audio into one serial port (SPORT) of your DSP? Analog Devices' answer lies in its AD1870 and AD1871.

The AD1871 is a 24 bit, 96 kHz audio ADC that offers a unique 'cascading' feature. Cascade mode allows up to four AD1871s (eight channels) to drive a single DSP SPORT. This is especially useful for multichannel applications such as 'prosumer' mixing consoles. The AD1871 features two 24 bit conversion channels, each with programmable gain amplifier, multibit-modulator, and decimation filters. It offers the performance required for emerging consumer and prosumer applications, 97 dB of THDN and 107 dB of dynamic range. Each of the AD1871's input channels can be used as either single-ended or differential inputs. The AD1871's audio data interface supports all common interface formats such as I2S, left-justified, and right-justified. It is housed in a 28-lead SSOP package.

The AD1870 is a new low-cost, 16 bit audio ADC pin-for-pin compatible with the popular AD1877. It offers the same superior performance, 92 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 90 dB THDN. The serial digital output is very flexible with eight user-defined modes, both master and slave. The AD1870 can also be interfaced to DSP chips (such as the ADSP-219x and SHARC families) with a minimum of glue logic. The primary customers are consumer audio electronics OEMs. Applications include: CD-R, automotive hifi systems, digital TV and HDTV.
