Thin-film on silicon filter/termination meets IEEE-1284

26 Jan 2000 Passive Components

Philips Components offers a wide variety of thin-film on silicon solutions for meeting the termination and filtering requirements of IEEE-1284 parallel port interfaces. The IP4100 family provides the termination and filtering for the nine data and strobe lines, while the IP4150 family address all 17 lines of the IEEE-1284 ECP/EPP interface as a complete one-chip solution.

The IP4100 family is available with standard 33 Ohm series resistors for the nine data/strobe lines, along with either 1K, 2,2K or 4,7 kOhm pull-up resistors and are available in either 20 or 24-pin QSOP or 20-pin SSOP packages. ESD protection to 2 kV, in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2 Level 1 is provided on all pins of the IP4100.

The 17-channel IP4150 family is provided in an industry-standard 28-pin QSOP package and is available with a series resistor value of 33 Ohm and either 2,2 or 4,7 kOhm pull-up resistors. Their full functionality complies with the IEEE-1284 standard and includes cable termination, pull-up, EMI filtering and integral downstream ESD protection.

For the IP4150 family, the 8 kV contact rating for all pins connected to the I/O connector in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 specifications, is an outstanding benefit that virtually guarantees ultimate system robustness, claims the manufacturer.

Considering all of the components necessary to implement the IEEE-1284 functions plus the ESD protection, the IP4150 family packs a wealth of functionality into a small 28-pin QSOP package. Realising the full functionality in a traditional discrete format would require 26 resistors, 17 capacitors and 26 diodes, says Philips. The thin-film on silicon integrated passive approach results in significant savings in space and assembly costs.
