Analog Devices' new family of advanced, mixed-signal DSPs have been designed to meet the needs of emerging embedded control and signal processing applications. Combining the C-programmable ADSP-219x core with high-performance analog integration and VisualDSP++ development tools, the family represents the highest-performance mixed-signal DSP available, according to the manufacturer.
The embedded control and embedded signal processing markets for mixed-signal DSP technology continue to evolve beyond traditional applications such as motor control and servo positioning systems to more demanding, high-precision applications such as industrial process automation and data acquisition systems, intelligent sensor interfaces, robotics (industrial and consumer), optical networking control, and power systems control. Equipment manufacturers have traditionally relied on discrete solutions using best-in-class components - both high-performance analog and DSP. Analog Devices' ADSP-2199x family can offers new performance levels to the embedded control industry by merging its extensive signal chain knowledge.
The ADSP-21990 integrates a 160 MIPS, 16-bit, DSP processor - based on its C-programmable 219x DSP core - with an 8-channel, 14 bit, 20 MSa/s ADC core onto a single chip. Typical signal to noise ratio (SNR) is 70 dB. High-speed ADC data is interfaced to the DSP core memory using a dedicated DMA channel. This permits sophisticated over-sampling and data extrapolation techniques, in intelligent sensor interfaces, for example, by efficiently balancing the data throughput of the ADC with the computational capability of the DSP core.
Additional mixed-signal functions include dual sample-and-hold amplifiers for applications requiring simultaneous sampling, a precision on-chip voltage reference and an integrated power on reset (POR) circuit. To enhance its usefulness, in diverse embedded applications, the ADSP-21990 incorporates a number of on-chip peripherals such as different PWM generation modules (suitable for both motor and switching power converter control), incremental encoder interfaces, timers, serial communications ports, watchdog timers and interrupt controllers.
Memory integration in the ADSP-21990 includes 4 Kwords of random access program memory, 4 Kwords of random access data memory and an external addressable memory space of 1 Mword. The ADSP-21991 offers larger amounts of on-chip memory - up to 32K words of program RAM and 8K words of data RAM.
Both members of the ADSP-2199x family of products are supported by ADI's Crosscore hardware and software development tools. ADSP-21990/21991 will both be available in a 196-ball, mini-BGA package and a 176-pin TQFP package. The full industrial temperate range of -40°C to +85°C is supported.
