Analog Devices' ADSP-TS101S TigerSHARC digital signal processor is now shipping to customers at an industry-leading 250 MHz. The device, implemented in 0,13 micron process with eight layers of copper interconnect, is targeted at numerous signal processing applications that rely on multiple processors working together to execute computationally-intensive functions. TigerSHARC DSPs will be used in applications such as defence, medical, communications, video and industrial systems, including 3G cellular market.
"With this announcement, Analog Devices becomes the first manufacturer to offer a 250 MHz general-purpose, floating-point DSP," said Brian McAloon, group vice president, DSP and System Products, Analog Devices. "We have achieved another milestone on the path toward establishing the TigerSHARC architecture as the performance leader in both 32-bit floating-point, and soon, 16-bit fixed-point."
At a 250 MHz clock rate, the ADSP-TS101S offers 1500 MFLOPS peak performance and a floating point, 1024-point complex FFT time of 39 µs. It has native support for multiple data types and processes two billion 16-bit multiply and accumulates per second (MACS) at 250 MHz. At these performance levels, typical power dissipation is 1,5 W, making it optimal for multiprocessing applications where heat dissipation is a concern.
TigerSHARC DSP offers a complete set of on-chip features including a large 6 Mb internal memory, 14-channel zero-overhead DMA engine, 1,8 GB I/O throughput and two types of integrated multiprocessing support. Cluster multiprocessing allows for eight TigerSHARC DSPs, a host, and a global memory to connect without any addition logic. The link ports provide for a high bandwidth point-to-point multiprocessing connection that is complementary to the cluster multiprocessing. These two forms of multiprocessing support coupled with the DSP's floating-point performance, zero overhead DMA engine, and large internal memory provide the keys to designing a power, cost, and size-optimised multiprocessing system.
