Silicon fingerprint sensor

24 April 2002 Electronics Technology

The TCS2A fingerprint sensor from STMicroelectronics is one of the company's successful TouchChip range of silicon fingerprint sensors.

This high performance silicon sensor has a compact size and low profile optimised for portable devices. It is targeted at high volume, price-sensitive consumer applications. Its low-power consumption makes it suitable for portable and/or battery-powered systems.

Like all fingerprint sensors in the TouchChip family, the TCS2A is based on ST's Active Capacitive-Sensing Technology. Shown to create better quality images than other silicon solutions, this technology enables TouchChip customers to build high levels of security into their biometric subsystems.

Rapid integration is made possible by using the simple application programming interface. With just a few simple functions provided to interface the TouchChip subsystem with their own software, a system can be developed very quickly without an in-depth knowledge of biometrics.
