Environmentally-friendly and safe coaxial cable family

24 April 2002 Interconnection

With immediate effect, users can switch from fluorine-containing coaxial cables to a new, halogen-free and environmentally-friendly cable family. Enviroflex is a new halogen-free product family from Huber+Suhner that allows unrestricted use of standard connectors.

The materials used in the cable design do not include any fluorine-containing plastics either in the dielectric or in the jacket. In addition, the dimensions of the individual cable types remain completely compatible with the international MIL-C-17 RG standards. This also applies to Suhner's cable type K02252D, which corresponds to the RG 316/U, but is provided with double braiding. This means that when applying this environmentally-friendly Enviroflex cable family it is possible to continue to use standard RF connectors without any restriction. The cables are a full replacement for cables of type RG PTFE and also have exactly the same dimensions as that design. Also, claims the manufacturer, they are appreciably less expensive than the equivalent PTFE types.

These cables are completely halogen-free (LSFH = low smoke free of halogen) because LSFH RADOX materials with their active flame protection characteristics are used. The PE-based flame-retardant material also allows easy and safe disposal. The special polyethylene (PE) that is used for the dielectric is foamed just to the point that a dielectric constant of 2,0 is achieved in order to ensure size compatibility with RG types. Radiation cross-linking allows the maximum application temperature of the polyethylene to be increased from +70 to +105°C. This extended range covers most applications. It allows service in a higher power range and the use of connectors with soldered inside conductors.

Outwardly, the Enviroflex cable family is distinguished from RG types by a black jacket and blue longitudinal markings. The small types are entirely dark blue. This cable family from Huber+Suhner is UL 3651 approved.
