High current multiphase DC-DC conversion reference designs

International Rectifier has introduced three new multiphase, high current DC-DC converter reference designs, which use its iP2001 device, a building block for 5-12 V input, 1-2 V output synchronous buck converter circuits. The reference designs offer high efficiency in a compact footprint. For example, the IRDCiP2001-C four-phase converter reference design offers up to 88,5% efficiency at 80 A full load, 1,6 Vout and 500 kHz with no air flow. This represents an efficiency improvement of up to 10% over a discrete solution, says IR.
Based on IR's innovative iPOWIR technology, the iP2001 is a flexible platform designed to simplify power conversion circuit design. Layout-critical passive components and optimised power semiconductors are arranged in a compact BGA package. One iP2001 device replaces up to 11 discrete components, significantly reducing part count and footprint. The iP2001 device only requires a multiphase controller, input and output capacitors and output inductors to enable a fully functional multiphase synchronous buck converter.
The iP2001 devices are now rated at 20 A, an upgrade from the original 15 A rating. The IRDCiP2001-A reference design is a two-phase DC-DC converter capable of up to 40 A, the IRDCiP2001-B is a three-phase buck converter capable of 60 A, and the IRDCiP2001-C is a four-phase 80 A buck converter.
The reference designs simplify high current DC-DC converter circuit development used to power CPUs in servers as well as network processing units (NPUs) and application-specific ICs (ASICs) in networking, telecom switchers and routers.
