High temperature electrolytic capacitators cut the size of harsh environment electronics

16 Feb 2000 Passive Components

A range of advanced high temperature electrolytic capacitors from BC Components means that designers no longer have to suffer the penalties of large case size, limited operating lifetime and high component cost when choosing electrolytic capacitors for high temperature applications. According to the company, its capacitors in the 140 RTM series, which includes capacitance values in the range 22-4700 µF, feature minimum lifetimes of between 2500 hours and 4000 hours at 125°C. Yet the 470 µF/35 V device only occupies a volume of 2,45 cm3 - less than half that of equivalent high temperature electrolytics currently on the market.

"This breakthrough in high temperature electrolytic capacitor design means that designers can now shrink the size of electronic modules that are destined for use in harsh automotive and industrial environments," commented product marketing manager Franz Wieser. "It will also allow compact switchmode power supplies to operate without forced-air cooling," he added.

The high ripple-current ratings of 140 RTM electrolytics also contribute to equipment miniaturisation by allowing a single 140 RTM capacitor to be used in applications where the necessary ripple current would normally have to be shared between two or more capacitors connected in parallel. Their ability to survive temperature excursions to 125°C, together with 60°C lifetimes in excess of 15 years or 25 years depending on case size, contribute to excellent long-term equipment reliability. Under well defined operating conditions the case temperature can even be allowed to reach 150°C.

These high temperature aluminium electrolytic capacitors are all radial lead types with case diameters and mounting heights ranging between 10 x 12 mm and 18 x 31 mm.
