Time-saving direct termination for polymer fibres

5 June 2002 Interconnection

A fibre-optic printed circuit terminal block from Phoenix Contact makes connector preassembly superfluous and guarantees fast and simple direct termination. The FOPT 2.2 provides a high-quality alternative to conventional termination systems using polymer fibre technology, which requires time-consuming and also cost-intensive assembly using special tools.

It is sufficient to simply cut the polymer fibre to the required length with a fibre cutter. Then, for termination, all that has to be done is to push the fibre-optic cable into the opening provided. It can be released again by simply actuating the orange-coloured opening lever.

With this fast termination PCB terminal the optical transmit and receive diodes are already integrated into the terminal housing. The fibre-optic cable is positioned exactly in front of the diode using a new type of spring mechanism, which also serves as strain relief. Transmission distances of up to 50 m with bit rates of up to 5 Mbps can be implemented with the modular PCB terminal. This product is also available with an optional anti kinking snout.
