Flash microcontroller can directly drive LCD

17 July 2002 DSP, Micros & Memory

Designers of products with liquid crystal displays (LCDs) can now take advantage of an innovative 8 bit Flash microcontroller (MCU) with an advanced LCD driver architecture that offers direct connection to LCD panels. The 68HC908LJ12 MCU from Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector also features both a versatile on-chip realtime clock (RTC) to enable power savings and an asynchronous serial communications interface, virtually eliminating the need for external driver components. These and other features may help to ease design efforts and lower overall system costs for embedded systems such as digital cameras, thermostats, portable computing devices, meters and medical instruments.

In addition to this, the 68HC908LJ12 MCU features 12 KB of on-chip Flash memory as well as the following:

* Serial communications interface: UART asynchronous communications system; optional infrared modulator/demodulator.

* Serial peripheral interface: high-speed synchronous communication between multiple MCUs or between MCU and serial peripherals.

* 10 bit analog-to-digital converter: six channels; single conversion in 8,5 µs.

* 32 MHz phase-locked loop: virtually eliminates need for crystals/oscillators.

* EMS (electromagnetic susceptibility) performance offers greater isolation of environmental noise.
