System memory solution for DSPs

17 July 2002 DSP, Micros & Memory

STMicroelectronics has introduced its third digital signal processor System Memory (DSM) product. The 4 Mb Flash DSM2150F5 provides an in-system-programmable, turnkey system-memory solution for DSPs. In particular, the family is designed specifically to support Analog Devices' ADSP-2153x family of DSPs, but also supports ADI's other general-purpose 16 bit and 32 bit DSP families.

The DSM2150F5 provides two independent Flash memory arrays of 512 KB and 32 KB, an integrated programmable logic device (PLD) array with over 3000 gates and 16 macrocells, and up to 40 multifunction I/O pins. By integrating Flash memory, programmable logic, and I/O ports, the DSM2150F5 connects directly and without additional logic to the DSP to form a simple, flexible two-chip subsystem on which DSP-based products can be built for a wide range of applications.

The DSM2150F5 provides in-system programmability (ISP) via its JTAG ISP port. This reduces development time, and there is no need for socket-mounted pre-programmed memory and logic devices. The entire device (memory and configuration) can be programmed in 15-35 seconds via JTAG, with no involvement of the DSP. The DSM2150F5's JTAG port can also be connected to the JTAG debug port of the DSP for fast code iterations on the bench. Designers can configure the DSM2150F5 in situ, using ST's free PSDsoft Express development tool.

While the large 512 KB main Flash memory is ample storage for code and data tables to be boot-loaded into DSP SRAM, the smaller sector size of the secondary 32 KB Flash memory is suited for storing small data sets and calibration constants - eliminating the need for an external EEPROM. The secondary Flash can also be used to store custom start-up code which can be used in lieu of the internal DSP boot ROM allowing total flexibility. For example, the custom start-up code can be used to update the DSP internal SRAM via USB in the field - an action that is not possible using the internal DSP boot ROM.

The DSM2150F5's 3000 gate PLD can map any memory segment to any address. It also has 16 macrocells that can be used to implement any miscellaneous glue logic, eliminating the need for external PALs, PLDs, and 74-series logic for interfacing to keypads and displays, for example.

The device has 40 multifunction configurable I/O pins, increasing the number of peripherals that can be controlled without adding interface chips or increasing the host processor's workload.

The DSM2150F5's Flash memory features a 120 ns access time, 100 000-program-erase-cycle endurance, and 15-year data retention. It operates from 3,3 V ±10% over -40 to +85°C and comes in 80-pin TQFP.
