Integrated resistor-capacitor design in 0603 package

17 July 2002 Passive Components

AVX's (Z) chip, a discrete impedance-matching series resistor/capacitor chip, is designed to meet the needs of today's high-speed, highly efficient circuits. The 0603 size chip is ideal for line termination applications in products such as laptops and handhelds. AVX's (Z) chip enables board designers to achieve maximum signal integrity by eliminating reflections and reducing DC power consumption.

While resistors alone are still the prevalent method for matching impedance, the biggest problem with this is that when the signal line is high, a continuous DC current is drawn. With the (Z) chip, one obtains both the impedance matching properties of a resistor and the DC resistance of the capacitor. The advantages are reduced power consumption and board space saving provided by a volumetrically efficient component. An additional benefit of using a (Z) chip in termination drivers and receivers is that they provide lower EMI characteristics, thereby resulting in a superior signal. The resistor in the (Z) chip matches impedance and sets the time constant of the device, while the capacitor provides a high DC resistance, conditions the signal, and provides a small bucket of charge so the signal is delayed.

The (Z) chip is available in capacitance values of 33, 47, 68, 100 and 150 pF with a tolerance of ±20%, and resistor values of 22, 33, 47, 51, 100 and 150 Ohm with a tolerance of ±10%. The DC rated voltage is 25 V. Standard and custom designs are also available.
