T. Sampieri, Voltage Regulator Product, ST Microelectronics
An LED cluster driver from ST Microelectronics integrates all the functions required for the intelligent control and drive of LED automotive rear light clusters inside a single chip.
Designed to operate from 9 to 24 V, the monolithic device includes control, drive, protection and diagnostics for stop, tail and turn indicator lights, and provides up to 8 A of current-limited output from its 180 kHz SMPS.
The STLC1 device includes input buffers and individual low-side drivers for stop, turn and tail lights, with an integrated detector giving remote indication of lamp failure. LED current is provided by a fixed frequency SMPS system and to maximise efficiency the SMPS is automatically disabled when a light is not required.
STLC1 block diagram
The output voltage may be temperature compensated for any number of series connected LEDs, with low-side current control for each light ensuring that light output is maintained constant under a wide range of operating conditions.
To match harsh automotive environments, the STLC1 will withstand 60 V load dump and is specified from -40 to +125°C. It also includes built-in thermal protection for the integrated switching transistors.
Features:
* Input voltage: 9 to 24 V.
* PWM oscillator frequency: 180 kHz.
* Programmable low side driver overcurrent limit protection.
* Undercurrent diagnostic.
* Input overvoltage protection.
* Very low standby current.
* Thermal protection within hysteresis.
The STLC1 is housed in the compact high power PowerSO-20 package. It is possible to use this device to drive one, two or three LED arrays, depending on configuration desired.
A complete demoboard is also offered.
