Mil-spec stacked capacitors

10 September 2002 Passive Components

AVX is the only QPL-listed manufacturer offering encapsulated stacked capacitors for very high performance applications in both T and B-levels of reliability. AVX says it was the first manufacturer to offer SMPS stacked (SupraCap) MIL-PRF-49470 qualified capacitors, and now, it also offers high reliability (T-level) up to 120 µF and in standard reliability (B-level) up to 270 µF.

Designed for high-current, high-power and high-temperature applications, these stacked capacitors have very low ESR (equivalent series resistance) and ESL (equivalent series inductance). The SMPS Series capacitors offer design and component engineers a proven technology specifically designed for programs requiring high reliability performance in harsh environments. They offer superior volumetric efficiency in comparison with other capacitor technologies.

AVX says it is the main supplier of capacitors for the power distribution system in the International Space Station (ISS) and the company's SMPS Series capacitors are also used extensively on military and commercial satellites, most major missile programs, and other aerospace and avionics applications. MIL-PRF-49470 SMPS Series capacitors are primarily used in input/output filters of high-power and high-voltage power supplies as well as in bus filters and DC snubbers for high power inverters and other high-current applications. These capacitors are available with through-hole and surface mount leads. Operating temperature range is -55 to +125°C.
