Thin film electroluminescent flat pannel VGA display family can upgrade LCDs

1 March 2000 Opto-Electronics

With Planar's proprietary integral contrast and brightness enhancement (ICEBrite) technology, the company says these displays achieve an unprecedented level of visual performance. The result is a crisp, clear image and at-a-glance readability, without blooming or haloing frequently seen with other flat panel technologies. This superior optical performance is achieved across a wide operating temperature range and over a wide range of ambient light environments, without the use of expensive filters, it claims.

Thin film EL technology

Planar's ICEBrite EL displays consist of a solid-state glass panel, an electronic control circuit and a power supply.

The thin film EL glass panel consists of a luminescent phosphor layer sandwiched between transparent dielectric layers and a matrix of row and column electrodes. A circuit board containing the drive and control electronics is connected to the back of the glass panel. Voltage is applied to row and column electrodes causing the area of intersection (a pixel) to emit light.

The result of this solid-state design is a flat, compact, reliable and inherently rugged display with exceptionally fast response times (<1 ms).

Integral contrast enhancement (ICE) technology achieves superior image contrast. ICE technology incorporates a dark, light absorbing layer at the rear of the display to capture stray light from the environment and from adjacent lit pixels, eliminating blooming or haloing, says Planar.

Planar ICEBrite EL displays are commonly used in harsh and demanding environments. A compact, lightweight package gives EL displays shock resistance, extreme durability and a long, reliable operating life. Long-term testing verifies that the expected trouble-free operating time of ICEBrite displays, including the drive electronics, is claimed to exceed 100 000 h while maintaining greater than 75% of its original brightness. These displays are also designed to minimise both EMI susceptibility and emission.
